Bannockburn
1314 Pinot Noir
In Stock
Certified By: Not Certified Organic
Country of Origin: Australia
750ml
$36.95 $49.27 / LAbout the product
This was sourced from the whole gamut of Bannockburn’s Pinot blocks, planted in 1976, 1997 and 2007. And, like last year’s wine, the blend this year also benefits from healthy slug of the estate’s iconic (and certified organic) close-planted vineyards. The fruit was mostly destemmed and includes a measure of whole-bunch (20%) as well as a carbonic element. It was fermented wild and raised with 20% new oak (made from France's prized, and expensive, Tronçais oak).

Bernabeleva
Madrid Camino de Navaherreros Blanco
In Stock
Certified By: Not Certified Organic
Country of Origin: Spain
750ml
$37.95 $50.60 / LAbout the product
Bernabeleva’s Camino de Navaherreros wines were created for the US market when their importer requested an entry-level range to wean their clients onto the more up-market bottlings. After being on the waiting list for some time, we now get our own allocation. The white draws heavily on the estate’s old-vine Albillo, which brings textured floral fruit balanced by the freshness from a field blend of Macabeo, Garnacha Blanca and Malvar. And some Godello is coming soon.
The grapes are softly pressed and fermented wild in a combination of used oak barrels, large oak vats and stainless steel. The grapes in the open vats include a portion of whole bunches and skin maceration, and depending on the style of the year, some parcels go through malo, and some do not. The wine is bottled after nine months on its lees.
Even at this level, Bernabeleva’s wines overflow with character.

Bernabeleva
Madrid Navaherreros Blanco
In Stock
Certified By: Not Certified Organic
Country of Origin: Spain
750ml
$48.95 $65.27 / LAbout the product
The estate white blends 70% Albillo and 30% Viura. The Albillo is drawn from the estate’s original plantings (around 90 years old) in the Cantocuerdas vineyard, a sandy, granite-rich, highland terroir of this magical mountain country. The Macabeo comes from more recently acquired sites with a vine age of around 30 years. Both varieties are harvested by hand, and each sees a measure of skin contact before wild yeast fermentation in a mixture of stainless steel and large French and Austrian oak. Stylistically, it’s a step up in intensity and complexity, with a long, silky palate drenched in fresh stone fruits, wild herbs and a savoury lick of salty minerals. The pricing puts many a white from more fashionable regions to shame!

A terrific new addition to Marc Isart’s Cinco Leguas label (nee La Maldición). This wine sees Isart working with the old Tinta de Madrid clone of Tempranillo. Bannockburn
Sauvignon Blanc
In Stock
Certified By: Not Certified Organic
Country of Origin: Australia
750ml
$32.95 $43.93 / LAbout the product
Bannockburn’s Sauvignon Blanc has to be one of Australia’s most complex examples of this variety. Winemaker Matt Holmes leans into a richer, more layered and complex style, using barrel fermentation, skin contact and extended time on lees to build layers and intrigue into each release. 2019 was a fantastic vintage; warm and dry, resulting in a wine of richness, structure and balance. The 2019 was drawn mostly from the original Sauvignon Blanc plantings (1996) at the eastern edge of the property on a block adjacent to the Serré Pinot Noir vines. The remaining fruit was grown on another small block on the eastern side of the dam. Both blocks are in the organic-certified section of the property. Holmes makes the wine in a fuller style, though it’s a far cry from his predecessors’ ‘beasties’.
The fruit is split into three: a third was destemmed and lightly crushed before fermentation on skins for one week, finishing in older puncheons; another third whole-bunch pressed to puncheons (10% new); and the remainder whole-bunch pressed to tank. This punchy wine is all about the dinner table and can hold its own against big flavours; for instance, savoury shellfish broths with herbs and root vegetables have proved excellent matches. Gentle tropical fruit flavours are aligned to notes of quince, delicious savoury richness, seams of salinity, vibrant texture and a long-reaching finish. It’s a complex, unique ‘curio’ expression of Australian Sauvignon Blanc.

Domaine Plageoles
Gaillac Mauzac Nature Sparkling
In Stock
Certified By: Not Certified Organic
Country of Origin: France
750ml
$59.95 $79.93 / LAbout the product
Gaillac méthode ancestrale wines are the mother of pét-nats, and there is no better example than the Plageoles Mauzac Nature. Gaillac’s very long history of producing méthode ancestrale sparkling wines goes back to the 1500s (long before Champagne began producing sparkling wines). In fact, so synonymous was Gaillac with pét-nats, back in the day Méthode Gaillacoise was a widely used synonym for méthode ancestrale. The Plageoles example is from a 40-year-old parcel of the exceptionally rare Mauzac Rose grape variety.
In simple terms, the naturally fermented base wine is chilled to stop the fermentation when there is still 25-30 g/L residual sugar. The following spring, the wine is put into bottle and the fermentation continues under cork, producing the bubbles. There are no other additions and no need for dosage, as the bottle fermentation naturally stops when there is still a touch of residual sugar left in the wine.

Meltwater
Marlborough Chenin Blanc
In Stock
Certified By: Not Certified Organic
Country of Origin: New Zealand
750ml
$46.95 $62.60 / LAbout the product
This is the second release of Mike Paterson’s small batch, single-vineyard Chenin Blanc. Alongside Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the Brancott Valley’s Wrekin Vineyard is also home to a small parcel of Chenin Blanc. Although demand for the grape is increasing throughout the region, Mike has managed to maintain his allocation from close friends and owners, Jan and Andrew Johns. To ensure the grape’s thick skins and high acidity are mellowed in Marlborough’s moderate climate, Patterson seeks ripeness, with 13° Baumé the norm. This drives the style, which is a wine of generous texture that works beautifully at the table.
The handpicked fruit is whole-bunch pressed and sent with full solids to a seasoned puncheon for a wild ferment. The Meltwater Chenin is made much like the Corofin Chardonnays but taken out of oak a little earlier.

Meltwater
Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc
In Stock
Certified By: Not Certified Organic
Country of Origin: New Zealand
750ml
$29.95 $39.93 / LAbout the product
As you would expect of this producer, Meltwater’s hand-crafted Marlborough Sauvignon hits all the right notes, with considerably more texture and interest than this category typically delivers. For a start, it’s low-cropped from a single, certified organic vineyard in the southern foothills of the Wairau Valley. The grapes were hand-harvested into small bins and indigenous yeast fermentation occurred in tank. —an even rarer approach! For good measure, Paterson explains that during natural fermentation, a good portion of malic acidity drops out of the wine. This results in more palate breadth and means he can ferment all the sugars without having to rely on artificial balance. The wine was aged on lees for nine months over winter.
